Essential guides for navigating Route 66
You are thinking of driving Route 66 for the experience of the historic route, the towns, the Americana and the people. This is a once in a lifetime holiday so you need to do it right and here’s how.
How do you find and stay on Route 66?
Roadside signage can be rather hit and miss depending on state and locality. Standard SatNav and phone maps will keep trying to find the “best route” which will normally be the highways which generally bypass Historic Route 66.
Of course, neither of these will tell you additional information about the route or where points of interest can be found.

We are UK based (in Bedford) authorised resellers of two of the best publications available; the "Route 66 Guide for Travelers” by renowned artist and Route 66 historian Jerry McClanahan and the "Here It Is, Route 66 Map Series” by writer and photographer Jim Ross and Jerry McClanahan.

EZ66 Guide (5th Edition)
This is the new 2023 5th edition of the turn-by-turn guidebook, driving in either direction with detailed sketch maps to show your route. This mentions some of the recommended places of interest along the route. This book is widely recognised as the essential guide for driving Route 66.
Jerry, the author and artist has a gallery in Oklahoma and loves meeting “roadies” and will happily sign your book.
Here It Is! Map Series
This is a set of fold out maps, each covering one of the eight states which Route 66 travels through. They have a state map with directions and points of interest. This is not as comprehensive as the EZ66 guide, but are great for an overview of the route ahead, maybe as you’re having breakfast. For first time travellers we would recommend the EZ66 guide. However these are great as a supplementary purchase.
Route 66 Navigation Phone App
Available on both Android and iPhone, the Route 66 Navigation app is a SatNav specifically for Route 66. It will show you alternative alignments, driving in either direction with points of interest along the way. There is also an option to download the maps so that you are not reliant on a good phone signal (which isn’t always possible on Route 66!)
